Smiling Wings Day Brings Aviation Adventure to Local Kids

Saturday 14 September, 16:28 Europe/London

Glasgow Prestwick Airport, in partnership with Prestwick Flying Club and Aviation Without Borders Charity, hosted a “Smiling Wings Day” an event created to introduce local children to the magic of flight. Eighteen young aviators, many flying for the first time, took to the skies for a day filled with excitement and wonder.

Our special passengers from East Ayrshire Young Carers Centre, were given the chance to experience something truly special. The event was made possible through the generous support of both Glasgow Prestwick Airport staff and Prestwick Flying Club members, who volunteered their time and expertise. Light aircraft, each carrying two to four passengers, offered the children a 30-minute flight high above the Ayrshire skies, with some even having the unique experience of flying over their own homes. The flights left the young passengers in awe as they enjoyed stunning views of the coastline from a thrilling new perspective.

“Smiling Wings Day is a fantastic opportunity for us to inspire the next generation of aviation enthusiasts,” said Kevin McWhirter, Aircraft Dispatch Supervisor at Glasgow Prestwick Airport. “The joy and excitement these children feel, is a testament to the positive impact this event has on the local community.”

Glasgow Prestwick Airport also waived fees for the event and provided goody bags for the children, with contributions from Home Bargains in Kilmarnock, who donated gifts to make the day even more special.

We are proud to support such an inspiring event. Seeing the excitement on the children’s faces as they experience the thrill of flight is incredibly rewarding,” commented Derek Pake, a Prestwick Flying Club member and one of the organisers of the event.

Fiona Pirrie, Co-Chief Executive at East Ayrshire Carers Centre said, “What an amazing experience for our young carers who have never flown before, going from being terrified to go up in the air to not wanting to come back down to ground. Thank you so much for the opportunity to all involved in making magical memories for the young people.”

The combined efforts of both Prestwick Flying Club and Glasgow Prestwick Airport staff ensured that each child enjoyed a safe, exciting, and memorable flight, creating lasting memories.
