Thinking of travelling to Spain this summer – then make sure you put Malaga Fair on your holiday itinerary as its spectacular midnight fireworks display is not to be missed.

The impressive light show on August 11th kicks off the annual fair which attracts thousands of visitors during its week-long run. It is a highlight of Malaga’s annual events calendar and offers something for everyone.

Following the Friday night fireworks, the festivities continue on La Malagueta beach with a music concert, usually featuring one of Spain’s best-known singers or groups.

The fair, which celebrates the capture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs on August 19th, 1487,  has two main centres:

Old Quarter – the area around Calle Larios becomes the party central during the day and the streets are packed with revellers, many of whom are dressed in traditional Andalusian costume. It’s also an opportunity to check out the latest fashions in flamenco dresses. There is also a daily parade of horses and carriages. A fantastic opportunity to soak up the Spanish culture.

Free concerts are a main feature of the fair and they are held in several squares in the old quarter including Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza Uncibay, Plaza Mitjana, Plaza de las Flores and Plaza de San Pedro de Alcántara.

Real de la Feria – this is the fairground in the west of Malaga. During the day the festivities are fairly low key but the area comes alive at night.  In addition to the funfair that are nearly 180 casetas areas, ‘huts’ with their own bar and music.
